Tesla Model Y Camping

Car camping has evolved over the years, and with the Tesla Model Y, it has reached a new level of convenience and comfort. Many have explored the wilderness and campgrounds in various ways, but camping in a Tesla brings a unique experience. In 2022, my partner and I upgraded to a Tesla Model Y, transforming our camping adventures. Here’s why the Tesla Model Y is an excellent choice for car camping and some tips we've learned along the way.

1. Tesla Camp Mode: Comfort Meets Technology

One of the standout features of the Tesla Model Y for camping is the built-in Camp Mode. Accessible through the temperature controls, it maintains airflow and temperature, allows for interior lighting, plays music or streaming services, and powers devices, all while using minimal power. During our camping trips, we've found that Camp Mode uses around 5-15% of the battery for a full night, depending on the conditions.

2. Extra Storage for Gear

The Tesla Model Y offers ample storage space, making it easy to fit all your camping gear. With a spacious trunk, sub-trunk, and footwells behind the front seats, you can keep your essentials organized and easily accessible without sacrificing space for sleeping. You can also opt for additional roof storage if needed, but with careful packing, we found the existing storage more than sufficient.

3. Finding the Right Camping Mattress

Sleeping comfortably in your Tesla is crucial for an enjoyable camping experience. With the seats folded down, the rear cabin of the Model Y offers an 83-inch (210 cm) length. We initially used a 3-inch thick memory foam mattress but found it too thin, so we upgraded to the Exped MegaMat Duo 10 Sleeping Pad. It provides a perfect balance of comfort and fit, and it can be used both in the car and in a tent if needed.

4. Stargazing Through the Panoramic Roof

One of the magical aspects of camping in the Tesla Model Y is the panoramic glass roof. It offers a stunning view of the night sky, allowing you to stargaze from the comfort of your car. The glass is designed to block UV rays and withstand significant weight, providing a safe and enjoyable viewing experience.

Additional Tesla Camping Tips

• Ensure a full charge before arriving at your campsite. While Camp Mode uses minimal battery, it's always best to be prepared.
• Consider carrying adapters for charging at RV parks, and call ahead to check their policies on non-RVs.
• Set up a Tesla seat configuration titled “Camp Mode” to maximize space and comfort.
